How To Get A Healthy Night’s Sleep

As we change our calendars over to a new year, we are given the opportunity to rethink and renew the way we sleep. No other room in your home is as important to your rest and well-being as your bedroom. Thinking it's a room guests rarely see, it's no surprise many people short change their bedroom design, sacrificing comfort and style for bedding that will just get them by.

Sleep and health experts say that's a mistake! Your bed's primary purpose is to provide you a good night's rest, giving your body time to recover and recharge. Your bedding can't solve all of the issues that lead to insomnia, but cozy, comfortable bedding is a great place to start.

Here are a few ways you can prioritize your sleep health in the bedroom.

Get Your Full Eight

You never outgrow the adage of 8 hours of sleep for a healthy lifestyle. In fact, according to the National Sleep Foundation, adults over the age of 18 should receive 7-9 hours with school-aged children looking to gain closer to 10. Work as a family to make sure you’re planning your activities around a schedule that suits everyone’s needs and allows everyone in the home to greet each morning fully rebooted. Lack of sleep, which is scientifically considered to be 6 hours or less, is a known contributor to lack of concentration, poor memory and a weakened immune system. Set your home up for success and get the full 8-10 hours through consistency and proper scheduling.

Maximize Your Sleep

While some may find it a challenge to get a full eight to ten hours of blissful sleep, creating a peaceful bedroom environment is one way to help you get the most out of your hours of rest! We can’t emphasize this enough, but having bedding that is comfortable to you is so incredibly important to ensuring you don’t spend the night tossing and turning.

Your Bedding Materials Matter

Make sure your bedding is breathable, as air needs to circulate around your body as you rest. No matter the climate, quality bedding will reduce the amount you sweat when you sleep, while keeping you dry and cozy. Furthermore, bedding that allows your skin to breathe maintains its cleanliness. Limiting the moisture that arises, lessens the bacteria that grows and therefore reduces the frequency with which your bedding articles need to be washed, hopefully giving you more time to rest and relax!

Modal

With the supremely soft feel of silk, and the easy care of cotton, Modal offers the best of many worlds. Made from the pulp of a beech tree, Modal offers a supremely soft and breathable feel. For those concerned with their beauty sleep, Modal is moisture-wicking, anti-bacterial and has a supremely silky surface that minimizes abrasion on your skin and hair. What’s even better, is that unlike silk, it’s fully machine washable! Our Athens Modal is available in solid, stripe and dots, in four classic colors, while our Atwood Modal has a heathered effect in three dreamy hues.

Percale

Commonly referred to as a plain weave, Percale is a type of cotton fabric that is tightly woven with a flat matte finish and a cool, crisp feel, similar to the feeling of a man's dress shirt. Think of Percale as your go-to fabric during warm weather seasons with ultra-breathability. Our most popular Percale fabrics are Perla, Darcy, and N45.

Sateen

In contrast, Sateen is characterized by its smooth feel and lustrous appearance. As opposed to the regular over-and-under Percale weave, a Sateen is woven with one yarn under and three (or more) yarns over, thereby creating a silky surface. Sateen’s density makes it a great choice for sleeping during transition seasons. Some of our favorite Sateen collections are Royal Sateen, Princess, Villa and Plush 1000.

Keep Your Sanctuary Sacred

Technology can affect the way you sleep in various ways. The stimulus your brain is receiving can keep neurons firing when they should be getting ready to sleep. Late night T.V. or after hours work emails also lead your body to feel very awake when it should be winding down. By introducing smart devices, television and other technology into the bedroom you're reprogramming your brain into thinking your space for sleep is also a space for wakefulness. Make sure your body and brain are in-tune with your intentions by leaving your electronics plugged in somewhere other than your bedroom and setting your devices to night mode or turning them off all together!
